All charitable gifts should be directed to the University of South Carolina or its affiliated Foundations. These entities are tax-exempt eleemosynary organizations under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c) (3).
The responsibility of the affiliated Foundations is to administer gifts to the University of South Carolina and its regional or senior campuses (USC Aiken, USC Beaufort, USC Salkahatchie, USC Union). USC Lancaster administers gifts through the Educational Foundation of USC Lancaster. The Carolina Piedmont Foundation administers funds held for USC Upstate.
The affiliated Foundations are governed by independent boards of directors but work in collaboration with the University to most efficiently address its needs. Fund management and investment policies are considered and approved by the boards of directors. The University Development Office and Advancement Services record all gifts into the proper accounts and provide gift receipts to donors. Gifts for the University Treasurer are forwarded to that office.
